Antique Cats Paw Brunswick Pool Table 1845-1960
9 ft x 5 ft x 33 high. Used as a prop for the movie The Hustler with Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason. Burled walnut and rosewood, the base is gilded cast iron and ebonized wood. He has refurbished many antique Brunswick pool tables and also owns a “Cats Paw”. First off, thanks for letting me look at your table and get some information on the similarities with regard to my table. Your table base, and frame is similar to the one I have and the serial number of your table is #8349. All the separate wood pieces would have this stamped on them including the rails and slate frames. Your table is in very excellent condition. I believe this was one of two of the tables done at A. Schmidt in the mid seventies. I provided a copy of a photo of an Cats Paw. In any event, I believe your table is one of 4, possibly 5 confirmed to exist. 1 or 2 restored by A. Scmidt which you own one, my table, another table in Chicago, and another I know of on the east coast. There may have been more manufactured but it is hard to say how may besides these 4 or 5 tables still exist. It is hard to find or get information on these tables. My theory is that this table was a predecessor to the final cast iron leg Monarch pool table that was mass produced and thus the most recognized Brunswick in the World. The combination carved wood base and cast iron lions paws were probably the next step from the all wood carved lions and acorn center piece base Monarch.
