Marquee Novelty tables evolved after J. Brunswick mergedwith Cincinnati competitor Julius Balke & Company in 1873, thereaftercalled the J. Brunswick & Balke Co. Most of the tablesproduced by Brunswick to that point were designed with vertical framesresembling the English tables. In 1874, Brunswick introduced the Star of the West modelthat had a unique frame with slanted sides. Called the bevel frame, it wasthe prototype of table design for the next forty years. It was the Victorianperiod and this period produced some of the most remarkable furniture andarchitectural designs. Stylistically, the use of fancy ornamentation such ascarving, marquetry, incised spoon carving, brass filigree, embolization and gilding, defined this idiom of design. Brunswick was producing over 700 tables a year with about 60employees. The Marquee tables were mostly custom made for interior decoratorsand architects. They were aimed at the very high-end customers that wantedsomething very special. This Marquee Novelty table, serial number 15864, is astandard regulation 4-1/2 x 9-foot size.
