Unique American Billiard Table Made for 1873 Chicago Interstate Exposition. Condition is fully restored. Created by the firm Stephani, Monheimer and Hart, Chicago, Illinois circa 1872. Just two years after the infamous fire which destroyed most of the city, this exceptional table was exhibited in Chicago at the Great Inter-State Exposition of 1873, the citys first exposition. This premier example of American craftsmanship was created in anticipation of the nations centennial celebrations. The carved eagles bearing the shield of the Republic and thirteen stars combined with the extensive use of exotic wood inlays make this billiard table a true museum piece. Nearly one hundred and fifty years after its creation, this extraordinary billiard table remains a unique and historically important artifact of a young United States of America. From the record of the Great Inter-State Exposition of 1873 p. 58 Stephani, Monheimer & Hart, 191 and 193 Randolph Street, Chicago. Billiard Table, Cue Rack, etc. The table manufactured and exhibited by this firm was of rosewood, elaborately inlaid with ten different colors of costly imported woods, and was ornamented on four corners with an eagle carved artistically of rosewood, with the American coat of arms in gilt. The cue rack, also, was carved of rosewood, ornamented with gilt, and filled with a handsome assortment of French cues of the exhibitors own importation. Both the carved and inlaid work on the billiard table, as well as cue rack was admitted by competent judges to be the finest and most costly pieces of workmanship ever produced in this city. The actual cost of this display was one thousand dollars.
