Antique Billiard Table
This is an amazing table that is most certainly ONE OF A KIND. It was specially crafted by a man named August Hand of Cleveland, Ohio in the 1890’s. Hand was a sales representative for Brunswick, and a cabinet maker as well. It is believed that Mr. Hand was commissioned to build this table for a famous pioneer in Ohio. His name was Elmer Wood Gilmer. Gilmer was the founder of Peerless Electric. The very first electric lights in Warren, Ohio were installed in the Gilmer mansion. Gilmer was an avid 3 cushion/carom player and this table was built accordingly. The table was only used a short time because Mr. The table resided at the Gilmer mansion for about 100 years. The home was eventually donated by decendants and the Gilmer house became a well known museum on Millionaires Row in Warren, Ohio. The pool table was donated to Cleveland family friend for use in a youth center. However, because it was a carom table, it was never put together. It remained dismantled until it was acquired by Mr. Jerry Fathert in 2008. He skillfully converted the 9′ table to a regular pool table. The slates are perfect and cut to pockets exactly as they did in the 1890’s. There are no nail marks and this is the ORIGINAL finish. No stripping or re-finishing was needed. It is original right down to the bolts and screws. It is made of ash and oak, which was not all that special in the 1890’s, when all the fabulous inlaid tables were being produced. With his recent passing, his heir is making it available to someone that will appreciate it’s uniqueness and value. In today’s market and considering it’s history, you are no doubt looking at the only “HAND” table and rack in existence. The slate is in three pieces and one inch thick – absolutely perfect!
