ANTIQUE SALESMAN SAMPLE billiard table & / or 1890s billiard tournament trophy
This is an 1893 inlaid (marquetry) billiard table made for – and awarded as – a championship trophy – by the BENEDICT BILLIARD TABLE CO. It is dated under the felt. These were called the “EMBLEM” of the tournament, and were typically passed along from one winner to the next. These beautifully detailed, intricate miniatures were also offered by major table manufacturers as SALESMAN SAMPLES to promote sales. This is without question a one of a kind item. Even the rails are inlaid. There are birds at the corners of the cabinet. I replaced the tattered original dark green felt with precisely what was originally on it, and very carefully and thoroughly cleaned the piece more than 35 years ago. The brass nameplate was perfectly reproduced from a correct original full-sized brass Benedict Co. The tiny diamonds are made of what you’d expect in the 1890s. Its dimensions are: 18 1/2″ long, 10″ wide, and 6 1/4 tall. You”ll never see another one of these. The accompanying photograph image shows another miniature billiard tournament “EMBLEM”, made entirely of sterling silver. This is one of the the rarest of all SALESMAN SAMPLES & also of antique billiard collectibles that exist, and is one of only 2 we ever had the chance to own in the 3 1/2 decades we collected billiard items world wide. The protective plexiglass cover is included.
